PAGE 1 – Buy Hard to Find DVD (not released) on EBAY

HISTORY
VHS: Same ½” tape, different analog signal.
NTSC 30fps USA & Japan        PAL 25fps Europe
Language different.

DVD & Computer Disks Single Standard
DVD players play both NTSC 30fps and PAL 25fps.
Different language and subtitles on same DVD.

PAGE 2 – Regions – Slice Up The Map
1-Price Discrimination – price according to what each market is willing to pay & profit margin.  Complicated.
2-Release Date – Motion picture released to some countries later.  Takes time to dub or subtitle.

PAGE 3 – Nero Burn Software Shows Region
All Region DVD – Play on any player
    Limited Copyright, personal exchange
All Region Player – Plays almost anything
EXCEPT some DVDs – See PAGE 1

PAGE 4 – Region 2 in DVD Player or PC
Computer Drive Region Change Limited    DANGER!
    Run out of “times” drive stuck another region!

Other Techniques:    Macrovision – can’t copy from output
Encrypted – can’t copy disk
Disable Functions – Can’t skip copyright

Blu-Ray disks only 3 regions A, B and C.


Caution – Buying DVDs on ebay – make sure they are Region 1 for the US

Some Region 1 DVDs won’t play on “modified” All Region Player
1 – US & Territories, Bermuda, Canada
2 – Europe (most), Japan, Middle East, Egypt, South Africa
3 – Hong Kong, South Korea, SE Asia, Taiwan,
4 – Mexico, Central & South America, Australia
5 – North Korea, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa)
6 – Hong Kong, People’s Republic of China
Disk can be more than one Region such as 2, 4 and 5 or ALL.

US News & World Report 8/1/07:

Companies including Sony and Westin Hotels & Resorts employ a range of smells to spur spending. Sony Style stores, which sell the company's consumer electronics, puff a sweetish scent with citrus bases and vanilla overtones into the air. "They wanted to appeal to a female buyer more intimidated by electronic items," says Van Epps of ScentAir, which helped Sony develop its secret formula.

Christine Belich, Sony's vice president of visual merchandising, says that it's not possible to connect the scent directly to a boost in sales but the goal is to create an enjoyable shopping environment where customers want to linger. She adds that the scent was designed to appeal to both men and women. (The scent can be quite subtle—it could hardly be detected on a recent visit to the Sony Style store at Pentagon City Mall in Arlington, Va.)

Whether being stimulated by sound or smell, consumers are usually blissfully unaware of the fact that they are shopping under the influence. "The average consumer doesn't understand that they are being manipulated in that environment," says Anna Mattila, associate professor of marketing at Pennsylvania State University.
